1.     What was the inspiration behind the name The Duck Pond?
Melissa: Since we are new owners we are not sure how the name came about but if we had to guess we think the ducks are children in a pond of clothing.

2.     Describe the neighborhood where your store is located in Tustin, California. What are the local family hangouts you would recommend?
Melissa: Our store is located in an upscale shopping center in Tustin, California. Along with our store we have an upscale jewelry store, art gallery and women’s and men’s clothing stores. Minutes away from The Duck Pond is the Santa Ana Zoo, Irvine Regional Park, Disneyland, and the Discovery Center.

3.     It’s about that time to start packing up some of the old winter items and cleaning out the closet for spring clothes for your little one. What are 3 spring must-have items that are in your store?
Melissa: White sandals, a flirty dress, something navy, and (of course) matching hair accessories.

4.      What would people be surprised to learn about your store?
Melissa: We have a large supply of baptism clothes for both boys and girls, along with amazing dresses and party clothes for girls and great clothes for boys.

5.     Tell us about a “special” moment that made your day working at your store.
Melissa: The most exciting time for us was the first time we had someone come in and compliment the “new” atmosphere and our new clothes that we have – that made us feel proud to be the new owners of The Duck Pond.

6.     There are plenty of blooper funny moments being around children and mom’s all day in your store – tell us something funny a child has said that made you giggle.
Melissa: We love to hear little girls talk and parade around the store once they put on a party dress. One girl said she felt like a “fairy princess.”

7.     Tell us about any special events that you have planned at your store and fun deals we can expect.
Melissa: We have a “Ladies Night Out” on March 22nd from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and a “Sip and Stroll” on April 16th.  We also hope that the Easter Bunny will visit our store soon!

Melissa: Patience, patience, patience, this too will pass.

9.     What collection or piece from Le Top or Le Top Baby line or Rabbitmoon do you love from the Spring 2011?
Melissa: We love Poppies, Bee Happy and Daisy collections but we really love all of them!

We at Le Top always get excited about another premier retailer joining our family of fabulous stores that carry our clothing. We had the privilege of interviewing store owner, Lisa Newberry, about her cool style and being a young mom with one of the hippest boutiques in Southern California. Read more about her store, her inspiration, and parenting advice.

1.    What was the inspiration behind the name Papillon?
Lisa: Papillon, means butterfly in French. This is very significant to me because when my Grandmother Lois passed away, whenever we’d see a white butterfly, we’d know that Grandmomie was there with us. When I first decided to open Papillon, I remember seeing a white butterfly floating around me for several days leading up to my signing on the dotted line. Since then, 4 years later, I still see the white butterfly and still feel her support, just as she supported me throughout my childhood.

Papillon is a wondrous insect that symbolizes new life.  They’re vibrant, brilliantly colored, carefree and very unique. This is how I would describe a child. This is how I would describe Papillon…a unique children’s boutique!

2.    Describe the neighborhood where your store is located. Did you grow up in the local area? Is it the same as it was growing up?
Lisa: Papillon is located in Marina del Rey, CA. Marina del Rey is an upscale beach city that borders on the areas of Venice, Santa Monica, Playa del Rey and Playa Vista. I grew up in Santa Clarita, California but since graduating from UCLA (a few years ago), I’ve moved around a bit, but always managed to make my way back to the Marina. It’s a beautiful community to raise a family, go for a walk, ride a bike, eat out and of course, shop.

3.    Spring break is coming up in the next few months – with Southern California always being on the warmer/sunnier side, what are 3 vacation essentials a parent should buy for their child’s wardrobe? For a boy or girl…
Lisa: Three vacation essentials a parent should buy for their child are:

  • a floppy hat
  • white linen or organic cotton pants or dress (with a light sweater for layering)
  • and flip flops or a neutral color tennis shoe.

Oh, and of course 2 -3 swimsuits. I’ve found that when we vacation, the most important thing on Sasha’s agenda is to be in the water; whether it’s a pool or the ocean. She could careless about what she wears any other time. As much as we want our kids to look fashionable at all times, it matters more that they are comfortable, fuss free, and can spill an ice cream sundae on whatever they’re wearing without us moms stressing out about it. Did I mention I’m a stress case/Virgo sometimes when it comes to being a mom? 🙂

4.     Let’s talk Southern California…where are your favorite family hangouts?
Lisa: My family and I live in Marina del Rey, so we have the luxury of biking down to Venice Beach or the Santa Monica Pier on a whim.  What we love most though, is to do family dinners and BBQ’s at the house with all of our cousins, parents, everybody! If we do go out, we love 26 Beach (huge burgers that Sasha LOVES), Cheesecake Factory (great outdoor seating on the Marina where kids can play in the sand & on the jungle gym), or the local bowling alley, where we all, as a family, can enjoy hours of silly fun. Of course that doesn’t mean I win, but we still have a blast!

Owner of Papillon, Lisa Newberry

5.    Tell us…before you “had kids or grandkids, what is one thing you swore you’d never…?” Please share!
Lisa: Before I became mommy to Sasha, almost 9 years ago, I swore I’d never make her wear something she didn’t want to wear.  When I was growing up, I hated wearing dresses. But I didn’t have a choice. Of course now, I love dressing up in fancy, hip, unique clothes, including a tutu that Sasha & I both love to rock sometimes when we go out. Sasha doesn’t particularly like to wear dresses, or pink, but if she can add her own little style & flair, then all is good.

6.    Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Cupids and all, would you dress your little girl or boy in for Valentine’s Day?
Lisa: I love all holidays…Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, birthdays, and the tooth fairy. Valentines Day is just another excuse to do something fun with my daughter (and of course my significant other). I’d dress Sasha in a red or pink tutu (well, since she hates pink, let’s go with red), leggings, converse and a rocker tee shirt. She’s a tomboy, I’m a musician, so this would be a nice compromise for both of us.

7.    With all of the celebrity pregnancies going on from Natalie Portman to Kate Hudson to Nicole Kidman’s surprise baby….which celebrity mommy would you want to meet and why?
Lisa: What’s funny is, just last weekend, I met a mommy-to-be that I’d been wanting to meet for a while – Denise Boutte. She plays Dr. Sasha Brown on “Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns.” I always enjoy Denise’s acting and she has a style that is fierce that I’m sure she’ll carry on to her daughter, who is due to arrive in April. My daughter’s name is Sasha Brown. Denise said to us, “The real Sasha Brown.” What fun it was for Sasha and I to meet her. She was so pleasant and appreciates things that are unique and fabulous. I’m sure she’ll be a regular at Papillon and she’s going to love Le Top!

8.    Any special events or fun New Year traditions that you have planned at your store for the next few months?
Lisa: Every month at Papillon, we offer special events, such as book readings & signings, jewelry making parties, trunk shows, holiday bazaars, mom’s night out events, Monday Madness days and more.  Shopping at Papillon is always a fun and unique experience!

9.    Tell us your best parenting tip you know or would want to give to a new parent.
Lisa: As a parent of an 8 year old, I still feel like I’m learning…from my parents, my friends and my twin brother and sister-in -law who are parents of 5 children – 4 under the age of 12. BUT, I will say I have learned that parents should be patient with their children and realize that no matter how young they are, they are still individuals and have their own little mind about certain things like what they want to eat, decorating their room, how to fix their hair and of course, what to wear. As a storeowner, and a fashionista since I was a young girl, it can be a challenge at times, but realizing that Sasha has her own style and flair has made me appreciate fashion even more. It just makes things more fun having Papillon, and makes it more challenging for me to find unique lines (like Le Top) that she actually enjoys wearing.

10.    What collection or piece from Le Top or Le Top Baby line or Rabbitmoon do you love from the Spring 2011 or Fall 2010 collection?
Lisa: Le Top Baby is a new line for Papillon.  When I first saw it in the showroom and online I just had to have it. It’s fabulous! We’re looking forward to launching it this Spring!

We loved the oodles of doodles of facts that Misty Reynolds, owner of children’s boutique, DoodleBug’s, gave us about her store in Arkansas. She gives us the facts on first mommy and daddy essentials, what she swore she would never do as a parent and how she loves the fact that she gets to live the old quote, “Do something you love, and you will never WORK a day in your life!” Le Top loves DoodleBug’s and is proud to feature them as this weeks’ premier “Store Spotlight.” Enjoy and cheers!

1.    Where did the name DoodleBug’s Children’s Boutique come from? What was the inspiration behind the name?

Misty: The boutique was named DoodleBug’s when it was founded over 11 wonderful years ago by a previous owner.  It is a nickname that many, many parents and grandparents call the little ones in their lives.  It refers to sweet little children learning to crawl and walk around.  In the more than 4 years I have owned the store, I have had many customers and tourists stop and ask for one of our gift tags or large gift bags with the name “DoodleBugs” on it because that is their child’s nickname!!

2.    Describe the neighborhood where your store is located. Did you grow up in the local area? Is it the same as it was growing up?

Misty: DoodleBug’s Children’s Boutique is located in a wonderful resort town! We are on the very busy and ever-growing Central Avenue in beautiful Hot Springs, Arkansas. We have a very diverse town with a wonderful historic downtown area that consists of original bathhouses and great shops and restaurants. We are a lake town so we get thousands of tourists that own or rent condos on the lakes. I did not grow up in Hot Springs, but have lived here for 6 years. I grew up in a very small town in south Arkansas (population 700) where my husband and I have owned a grocery store for more than 15 years. Having those very-small town roots, I believe, prepared me for owning a boutique. The boutique experience should be very personal!! My store is only about 900 square feet, but it is packed with lots of goodies that are ever changing! Owning a business in a small town instilled in me that knowing each and every customer, their names, and their children’s names is so crucial to building a good customer base. Every day, as I come to work, I honestly get to do something that I love. I get to visit with all my wonderful customers who I consider my closest friends. I love the fact that I get to live the old quote, “Do something you love, and you will never WORK a day in your life!” I agree! I love what I do!

DoodleBug's display feature Le Top outfits from the "It's a Dog's Job", "Bumper Cars" and "T-Rex Touchdown" collections

3.     What would you suggest as the top 3 essentials a busy, working new mom or dad should buy to make her life easier from your store?

Misty: 3 things that I tell parents in my store that are crucial items to make life easier, simple and inexpensive are…Firstly, I believe a good-quality knit shirt, long or short sleeved, depending on the season. The basic colors I keep for my daughter are black, white, pink, and brown! They make many clothing items work better. They are great under a vest, sweater, or sleeveless shirt/dress. They also look great under jumpers! Same for boys. A nice white shirt can be worn under a sweater vest or a little john-john outfit!  Another item is leggings for girls! Get as many colors as you can! They make dresses wearable at all times! Even at school when cartwheels are a mode of transportation on the playground! Kids will be kids, so we should make life easier by using leggings most of the time! One more thing that is so important to make mornings go smoothly are great shoes! Pick a casual pair and a dressy pair! Grab your basic colors like a nice black and brown for boys, as well as a pair of tennis shoes! For girls, go for mary janes in a black and a brown. Don’t forget to get a silver shoe that can go with anything! Dress it up or dress it down!!  Easy, easy!

4.    Tell us…before you “had kids or grandkids, what is one thing you swore you’d never…?” Please share!

Misty:   I swore I would never let them pick out their own clothing while they were still young! Wow, eating my words is hard! My daughter Abby (8-years-old), and son Noah (11-years-old), love total comfort! Luckily, Le Top fit that bill perfectly when they were younger! They got total comfort, and I got the satisfaction that the outfits were so adorable and easy to take care of!! I share that information with parents on a daily basis. Le Top is one of the main brands in our store because it is truly for meeting function! The pictures speak for themselves!

5.    The holidays are around the corner – what are your top 5 items (clothes, toys, giftables, etc.) for any parent shopping for the holidays at your store?

Misty: We love gifts at our store. I absolutely love to wrap presents. We offer free gift wrapping services all year round and with every purchase. I love beautiful wrapping paper and big tulle bows. Some fun, easy gifts for the holidays include:

1.  Hairbows and hair flower clippies

2.  Squeaky shoes in fun colors!

3.  Fun holiday clothing for school and pictures

4.  Cool piggy banks

5.  Tutus for pictures and play, of course!

6.    What’s your favorite Halloween candy and why?

Misty: I love mini Twix bars. Caramel, chocolate, and a cookie!

7.    If you could give a toddler a makeover – Describe the perfect fashionable and functional outfit you would dress a boy and girl in.

Misty: Toddler years are my favorite! They are experienced walkers and talkers! They look adorable in their little clothing. For boys, I think you can’t go wrong with khaki cargo shorts or pants! Dress them up or down depending on the shirt! Church or playground, I love khakis for boys! For the girls, I think they need any type of casual long tunic tops or comfy dresses. Grab a pair of leggings and a big hairbow and you are out the door quickly and looking very sweet!

Le Top outfits from "Dottie Scotties", "Lavender's Blue", "Haute Dog" and "Santa's Helpers" collections

8.    What’s on your agenda for the holidays for your store? Any special events or fun holiday traditions at your store?

Misty: We are preparing for our Holiday Open House on the night of November 8. Food, cocktails, and fun! We will have door prizes and special savings storewide! Great time to get to visit with my customers and get in the holiday spirit!

9.    What collection or piece from Le Top or Le Top Baby line or Rabbitmoon do you love from the Fall/Holiday 2010 collection?

Misty: My absolute favorite collection from Le Top is actually in the fall collection this year. It is called “Haute Dog.” It is deep red and features Dachsund Weinee Dogs in a sweet brown color. It has been a hit with customers of all ages. The kids love it, as well as their parents and grandparents! I grew up owning weinee dogs! Brings back memories! We have sold out of the collection in both boy and girl. We are currently waiting for some more pieces to come in. Great fun, and of course, soft and comfortable. Just the way children like it!

Oh Zap!  We are featuring the cutest children’s boutique in New Mexico today as our premier “Store Spotlight” – Zap…Oh! We can’t get enough of how wonderful the store owner is, her merchandise, and especially her insight into the local area’s family activities and sites to see! Enjoy!

Where did the name Zap…Oh! come from?
Charlisa: I was in Argentina and thinking about opening a kid’s clothing boutique.  A children’s clothing designer and I were tossing around words.  We were thinking about the trend toward fun, ugly things like the ugly dolls and thought of toads.  The word for toad in Spanish is sapo … so it just morphed into Zap…Oh! – The name also fit since you can imagine a child putting on an outfit from our store and ‘Zap’ (Shazam), they’re so cute…Ooh! Aah!

2.      Describe the neighborhood where your store is located.
Charlisa: Nob Hill is the fun, walking, shopping, dining destination area of Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The University of New Mexico is just down the street, so it also has a bit of the college town feel.  Last year this area was designated a Main Street area by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

3.      What are the best 3 family activities to do in Albuquerque, NM? Or fun spots to see?
Charlisa: We have an amazing Bio Park with a world-class zoo, aquarium, and botanical gardens.  The Explora! Museum is another highlight where the kids love to play with the hands-on science activities.   The city has done an amazing job of creating a family, bike friendly city with parks and bike paths throughout.

4.      Tell us about the school lunches your mom or dad made for you when you were a kid? What would someone find inside your brown paper bag?
Charlisa: Mom gave us 35 cents to buy our lunch.  Imagine 35 cents!!

5.      What tip would you give to a parent dressing a child for fall? Any hot trends?
Charlisa: Hats and scarves are what it’s all about, especially fedoras and skinny year ‘round scarves.

6.      Do you do anything special for Halloween at your store?
Charlisa: This year we’re going to have a local children’s author be a Zombie Zookeeper releasing stuffed ZombieZoo critters.  Each has it’s unique personality, such as Stich the non-typical Pink Pig who is obsessed with hygiene and her treasured possession is hand-sanitizer.    These cool, soft-stuffed toys will be at Toy Fair in New York in January.

7.      You have been in business a few years now and survived the economic downturn – what do you think has kept your business so strong and sets you apart from other children’s stores?
Charlisa: Lots of luck, lots of repeat customers, and constantly changing our merchandise.  The thing we notice with the downturn is that people were still needing gifts, clothes, and shoes for their kids.  However, they couldn’t spend as much and needed each item to be perfect, so we saw more exchanges (we only do returns for store credit) and more indecision.  We just upped our customer service and understanding.

8.      What is your best or most memorable moment in your store?
Charlisa: The very first customer insisted on buying something the day before we opened and she still comes back.  Her daughter is now too big for our shop, but it’s great to see her.

9.      What collection or piece from Le Top or Le Top Baby line or Rabbitmoon do you love from the Fall/Holiday 2010 collection?
Charlisa: I’m a dog lover, so all the dog and puppy motifs are a hit with me!

Boogie monster? Nope! Check out this week’s “Store Spotlight” with Kids Kloset in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Shirley McGinn gets down to earth with Le Top and gives tips on how to update your child’s wardrobe this summer and what her “must-haves” are for a family road trip!

Visit Le Top’s Facebook and become a Fan to receive weekly “Store Spotlight” updates — Click HERE

1.     Are you a Nebraska native? If so, what did you do growing up as a kid in the local area? Describe the neighborhood your store is in for us.
Shirley:
I am a Nebraska native.  I graduated from Broken Bow High School.  Music was always my love and I taught elementary music for several years.  I raised my family and then entered the retail business and have owned my own store for 10 years!  My store is located on a beautiful square, which is the center of the retail area in Broken Bow.  We have a “prime” spot [on the Square].

2.     So how did you get your start in the children’s business?
Shirley:
Well, I worked in a missy store for several years and opened a small department in the store that I worked in, and eventually out grew that space and opened my current store location.

3.     If you had to take a family road trip this summer – what 5 items could you not live without?
Shirley:
Comfortable clothes that always look fresh, plenty of cold water, games for the kids, snacks, and plenty of patience!!

4.     What is 1 tip you would give a parent on how to update your child’s wardrobe for summer?
Shirley:
Find clothes that are cool, easy to care for and feel good for a child.  Comfort is everything!

The Le Top wall features our Lot's o' Fish, Hip Hop Grasshopper, Sweatheart Butterfly, Daisy Duck, Wildflower, and Wild About Monokinis collections.

5.     Between all of the social media outlets – Facebook, Twitter, and more – what do you think about social networking and how it allows moms and dads to join cyber parenting communities where they can meet, gain knowledge, as well as get recommendations and support.
Shirley:
I think the concept is very interesting and I think the parents today are more in-tune with this type of resource.  My own children, as parents, rely on others for advise in this area and probably would use social networking to reach out to their friends.

6.     What do you feel are the three biggest keys to your success?
Shirley:
Variety, a knowledgeable staff, and our location.

7.     If you had one piece of advice for someone entering children’s retail today, what would it be?
Shirley:
Watch the price point and the quality. Also be sure the clothing has color and style.

8.     What is your best or most memorable moment in your store?
Shirley:
We have annual style shows and getting the children ready is always fun and the kids themselves have so much fun.

 9. What collection or piece from Le Top line do you love from the Spring/Summer 2010 collection?
Shirley:
The Le Top swimsuits!

Not “just for children,” but JUST TOO cute! Check out this week’s “Store Spotlight” with JM’s Just For Children in Bakersfield, California.  Molly Clifton, owner of JM’s Just for Children, tells us about the new meaning of “Home” for her customer’s kids and pre-choosing a child’s outfit the night before as a style strategy!

“Store Spotlight” updates — Click HERE
(at the bottom right of the home page)

1.     What is one fact about your store that a typical customer wouldn’t know?
Molly:
That I taught school for 15 years.  Teaching influenced me in the belief that the customer needs to be educated on why they are buying a product of this kind, and giving them friendly and knowledgeable service.  We are celebrating 31 years in September.

2.     What sets you apart as a successful children’s store?
Molly: Enthusiasm for the business.  Customer service has earned us 16 years of the “Best of Kern County” award.

3.     You probably have seen hundreds of mommies and daddies come through your store and hear them speaking with their children – what is the funniest or sweetest thing you have heard come out of a child’s mouth recently?
Molly: Everyday children cry when mommy takes them out of the play area to go “Home.”  Wanting to come to JM’s is the music to our ears.

4.     Are you a Bakersfield, California native? Describe the neighborhood your store is in for us.
Molly: I was born here, but did not live here until 1979.  My family started the first drug store in Shafter, California in 1919 which is a small town just North of here.  JM’s is in a strip center close to our only enclosed Mall.

5.     What type of clothing did you wear growing up as a kid? What tip would you give to a parent dressing a child?
Molly:  My girls were raised in this store, and now my granddaughters.  My tip to parents is ‘choose the outfit they are going to wear the night before, and then stick to it.’  It stops many arguments.

6.     If you could meet one celebrity mommy or daddy, who would they be and why, as well as what you like most about his or her style?
Molly: Well, I hope all of our customers are treated like celebrities.  I have found that most customers vary their taste.  In one purchase, you can have a twirly frilly dress and a Hurley T-shirt.

7.     As summer heats up – what is 1 tip you would give a parent on how to dress your child for the heat and what would a key closet staple be to dress him or her for the warm weather, i.e. a sun hat, tank top, linen shorts, etc.?
Molly: Le Top of course.  They have great hats and cool cotton.

8.     If you had one piece of advice for someone entering children’s retail today, what would it be?
Molly: Do your homework.  You need a good population base and don’t pre-judge your customer.  Make sure you have a variety and learn from your sales. What they say and what they buy, may be very different.

9.     What is your best or most memorable moment in your store?
Molly:
Best moment for me is the JM’s Family.  Both Managers have been with us over 27 years.  Most memorable was when a car ran though the window when the elderly driver stepped on the gas instead of the brake.  He went through the entire store!

10.     What collection or piece from Le Top or Le Top Baby line do you love from the Spring/Summer 2010 collection?
Molly: ‘Daisy Duck’ Collection! I sold out every piece!
