Our sales representative in Philadelphia sent us some pictures of the recent snow storm that hit his area, closing many government and civil offices.  We hear that a big part of the country is having a snow day!  What fun!

Here in California, we don’t get “snow days” – we mostly experience many “rainy days”.  I remember while growing up here in the Bay Area that on rainy days we would come up with great games that kept us occupied indoors while the weather was storming outside.  One of my favorite things was to take apart the couch and raid the linen cabinet to build a fort.  I loved creating tunnels and rooms.  My sister and I would play for hours on end in our forts, while my mom maintained her sanity – a challenge with two very active little girls cooped up indoors!

What indoor activities do you use to keep your little ones busy on rainy or snowy days?

Heidi Hulse had finished up her Master’s Degree and had a momentous choice to make…the nearest job would have been an hour commute away.  Heidi choose instead to use her education within her community, and fulfill a perceived need – she knew from experience that the closest place to shop for children’s clothing was over 50 miles away – so she opened a delightful boutique that catered to the local community.  Family was an important consideration as well, and to honor this priority the boutique name is the combination of her two children’s middle names – Haylee Nicole and Hunter Jordan.

Nicole Jordan’s Children’s Clothing Boutique is located in charming and historic Mount Vernon, Ohio – founded over 200 years ago – an important stop along the railroad that connected Pittsburgh to Chicago and St. Louis.  One of Heidi’s favorite things about her decision to open Nicole Jordan is the friends she has made within the community. She is constantly running into customers and their children around town.  The children love the store (especially her toy room!) and the dad’s know her because “You’re the one that has the store where my wife spends her money!”  Heidi loves the craziness of “Sale Days” and wondering “What is going on here???”  She also loves “Grandmas with a ‘shopping problem!”  One of Heidi’s biggest ‘perks’ is having flexibility, including the ability to have her children with her at the store.  (Although Heidi does confide that “Some days I don’t always feel that way!”)

Customer comments prove that Heidi has done a great job with her decision:

“For the best dress selection: The service is very personalized and the hand-picked selection is adorable. From the moment you walk in you know you are in a special place.”

“Great place to buy children’s clothes: I am always pleased when I shop at Nicole Jordan’s.  She carries beautiful dresses for infants.”

Nicole Jordan is known for special occasion clothing, including Communion, Easter and Christmas dresses.  Heidi’s impressive personalized service is another attractive reason to visit the store.  She also is pleased and happy to accept phone orders!  If you are visiting this pleasant area north of Columbus Ohio drop in and say hello – Heidi will be happy to make you feel like a local!

Big Sister Little Brother Playtime (Miranda in Flamingo Bay from le•top's 2009 Summer Collection)

Big Sister Little Brother Playtime (Miranda in Flamingo Bay from le•top's 2009 Summer Collection-see bottom of post to view more of the Collection)

I don’t know how many times the words “Don’t smother your brother” leave my lips each day. Miranda just LOVES her brother so much that she can’t seem to keep her hands off him. I am fortunate that she is old enough so I can rely on her to entertain her little brother for short segments of time, especially if I need a potty break or make us lunch. But sometimes, I need to keep my eye on her. If I turn my back for a second, I’ll discover her squeezing his chubby cheeks until drool or spit-up has covered up the front of his entire shirt. Or “playing with him” means she has taken both his hands and has shaken them vigorously almost popping his shoulders out of their sockets! Paulo’s response is usually with smiles and giggles because he loves all the attention she gives him. But sometimes, he’s screaming because his big sister has hugged him a little too long that he’s begging to be set free.

One day while playing, I guess Paulo had had enough. He grabbed a handful of her hair and yanked… HARD! So hard, Miranda was the one screaming. I should have helped her free, but instead I laughed out loud and grabbed my camera to capture her day of defeat.

FINAL SCORE: Miranda 37, Paulo 1

No, I did NOT say that!

No, I did NOT say that!

…submitted by a le•top blog reader

My husband and I are “trying” again, so we can give our 4 year old daughter, Siena, a sibling. I give answers that are more scientific in nature than the fairy-tale kind because Siena is seriously unsatisfied with my answers unless they’re very systematic and every facet of her question is explained (yes, of course I think she’s a genius) 😉 ! When she asked me (yet again!) how babies are made, I explained by saying that daddy puts something in mommy and plants his seed so the baby can grow. My daughter then started yelling:

I want to see Daddy’s seed!! I want to see Daddy’s seed!!”

Startled, I said calmly, “Sweetheart, you can’t see Daddy’s seed”, and Siena got SO UPSET!! I could hardly control myself from bursting out in laughter in front her, as I thought, geez, wait until I tell everyone at work about this one!

Cousins born on the same day showing some love!

Cousins born on the same day showing some love!

I just got this adorable photo, and it reminded me of how much I loved having my cousins around when I was little. I think it’s so special to grow up with them around. I have lots of memories of running around and playing all day during the summers. Cousins seem better than siblings because even though they are family, they’re not nearly as annoying! 😉 They are a nice balance between being a family member, as much as being just a good friend. How neat that these two were born on the same day!

The Joy of Breastfeeding

I have been breastfeeding my newborn for the last two weeks, and one time I was teasing my 4-year old daughter that maybe one day Daddy and I can go see a movie while she stayed home and babysat her little brother. She said,

I don’t think milk will come out of my nickels.”

Miranda holding her baby brother, Paulo

Miranda holding her baby brother, Paulo

Jamee sent this photo to me a little while back, and it really warmed my heart. Apparently, Miranda specifically chose and packed the le•top Strawberry Fields dress she’s wearing in her “hospital” suitcase (just like mom’s). She really wanted her first meeting with her new sibling to be special. They seem to be giving each other such deep, meaningful looks! Being the youngest (of only two kids), I’m not sure if birth order really has as much bearing as it might in larger families. I say this because I always acted like the first-born in many ways. And as for the relationship I had with my older brother, it was alternately very close for periods of time, and very…well…NOT close for other periods! Maybe my trying to usurp his first-born status had something to do with it? We were/are so different, and yet as adults, I notice how incredibly alike we can be in very subtle, and big ways, too.

Paulo in his I'm-going-home clothes, le•top baby, baby train (a gift from "Auntie" Chris!)

Through thick and thin, I have to say that I love my brother as I love no one else. He’s my one and only sibling, and I finally understand what my father meant when he used to admonish me for thinking friends were more “important.” Looking at Miranda holding her brand new baby brother, Paulo, I wish for them a wonderful bond that only siblings can have…and for the sake of their parents, I hope they develop that relationship with very minimal fighting! 😉

Loveable, adorable Santiago in his not-so-terrible twos...

Lovable, adorable (squishable!) Santiago in his not-so-terrible twos...

My friend Angela just had baby number two, a lovely little girl named…Sophia! She is just an angel, happy and giggly. Her big brother, Santiago loves her and loves to give her lots of kisses! Needless to say, with two kids now, Ang has her hands full. To add to the manic quality of her life, Santiago is…Two! Yes! The terrible twos! But you know, other than the overly abundant use of the word “no” (as in the every-other-word-is-no variety!), he really is not so “terrible.” He’s quite terribly loving actually! This past Christmas, we all met up at Ang’s mom’s house, and we adults (well, all the guys, my husband and Ang’s husband included!) had some mischievous fun engaging in a bit of trickery decorating Ang’s mom’s house with colored lights. Ang’s mom DETESTS colored lights, so we did it stealthily… (more…)

mirandabellyAfter months of waiting, I can finally feel the baby move. This is what I most remembered when I was pregnant the first time. That first kick from the baby inside makes it all REAL.

Tonight something interesting happened. My husband and daughter were sitting next to me—playing around. Miranda squealed with glee as she was being tickled. Then the baby kicked me. Daddy tickled her again, then the baby kicked me once again. Every time Miranda laughed or squealed, the baby kicked me. It was so cute!

It’s quite amazing to witness the sibling connection at such an early time! I can’t wait for my two children to meet face-to-face. Sixteen more weeks to go…
