O2Mask…submitted by guest contributor: Dawn H.

I was amazed at how demanding having a child was. I was also amazed at how I felt like I never got anything done! I had been married ten years prior to having my daughter. I was used to getting free time and completing my daily “to do” list most days. When my daughter was born, I joked to friends that she was my “new boss”.  Little did I know how demanding she would be, wanting to be held most of the time, along with nursing often and only happy if I held her. Shortly after I became a new mother, I had a health care practitioner recommend making it a priority to do something for myself at least once a week. I was surprised to hear this – especially since it came from a male. I guess I was overloaded with my body showing adrenal fatigue. I needed some rest and fun in my life. It was sort of like the announcement that the airlines warn you about “in case of loss of oxygen, please secure your mask first, then help others”.  How could I continue to care for my young child (especially when my husband traveled for overnight business often) if I wasn’t balanced myself? I realized I had not done much for myself in those first six months of being a mother.

I tried my best to figure out little ways that I could nurture myself. I started out slow like choosing an activity once a month that I enjoyed. I’d plan a creative outlet with a girlfriend and let my husband care for our daughter. At that time, my main passion was scrapbooking. I could enjoy and relax by getting photos into an album for others to enjoy. I realized after awhile that it was an activity that was still goal-oriented. I was supposed to be doing things for fun, right? If I was worried about finishing something, was that the most fun I could allow myself?Coloring
It’s taken me several years to get past this compulsion. I have managed to try a few new things with less pressure – things like playing in a monthly Bunco group, or doing some sort of art project. I rediscovered coloring books – yes, adults can color – it’s not just for kids! A friend shared with me woman’s coloring books with detailed designs that are just fun to color – a little or a lot at once. No deadlines, no pressure, just creative fun. I’m always looking for more ideas of simple, easy-to-do activities and ways to help nurture myself, so please share things that work for you!

Memory lane visits through scrapbooking!

Memory lane visits through scrapbooking!

…submitted by: Dawn in Logan, UT

Ever think about how you have such great photos of your precious children, but now – would they just give you a free moment to do something with those photos?!? I got into scrapbooking when my daughter was just a newborn. Despite the time-thief a baby can be, it was easier to get photos into albums when she hadn’t started crawling! I loved doing things the old fashioned way (this was 2000) with colored papers, stickers, and photos. I was fortunate that someone introduced me to the home based business of Creative Memories, and I soon got lots of supplies and ideas from my Creative Memories consultant. Soon after, my daughter was crawling, and I had my hands full only taking photos and just keeping her out of trouble! My scrapbooking time became limited to when I could leave the house to participate in scrapbooking crops, or when she was asleep (though I never trusted her that I’d leave out my supplies!)

Over the past eight years, the scrapbooking industry has boomed and changed. Now one can do digital scrapbooking pages, send them to a local printer and slip the colored printed pages into an album, or even pay a company to print out an entire album for you. There is software (both free and for sale) from various companies to aid in the process of digital scrapbooking…you don’t have to use scissors, just a mouse! I haven’t totally converted to this new age of scrapbooking, as I still have a closet full of scrapbooking paper, stickers, pages, and tons of photos!

My scrapbooking time is still limited, but at least (most of the time) photos don’t go bad! And whenever I finally get photos into albums, my family loves them!

main_showerA couple of weekends ago, my mom and sisters-in-law threw a baby shower for me. They decided on “The Wizard of Oz” theme because my daughter dressed up as Dorothy last Halloween—and she requested that Daddy and Mommy be dressed up as well. A family photo was taken of the three of us in full costume, so it was conveniently appropriate that we welcome our little munchkin the way “big sister” would want it.

Everything was decorated perfectly to match the theme. The invitations were worded with Bottles and diapers and bibs… Oh my! The shower was held at The Emerald City (or my mom’s house). And when I arrived at “The Emerald City,” all I had to do was follow the yellow brick road to the dining room where everything was decorated with blue gingham tablecloths, wicker baskets, ruby red slippers, lollipops, and homemade rainbow cupcakes! It was a wonderful sight to behold! Even the sign-in guest sheets were scrapbook pages in “The Wizard of Oz” theme.

01cakefaceWe’ve received many photos from our customers over the years, but didn’t have the time to properly archive them (don’t you hate when that happens? Full of good intentions to get them organized, and all we could manage was taping them to a wall in our office kitchen). Well, with our blog (which we scarily agreed to kicking and screaming – we’re into beautiful kids clothes, not technology!) and lots of handholding from our Tech Wiz, we can finally ‘scrapbook’ your photos (if only our Tech Wiz would now just organize our closets). With our bellies still full from Thanksgiving feasts, we think photos of your “Messiest Eaters” would be a great way to kick off our blog launch. (more…)
