bandaidReading Dawn’s post about her school field trip mishap made me think about my teaching days. When I used to be an elementary school teacher, I went through boxes of Band-Aids. And I do mean BOXES! Not because my students were injured all the time, but because they felt that for every little “boo-boo,” a Band-Aid somehow made it all better. Now by “boo-boo” I’m talking about:

  • a little scratch
  • an insect bite
  • an old bump
  • a bruise
  • a scar
  • sometimes, a student would even go as far as picking an old scab just to get it bleeding for a Band-Aid!

Now that my oldest is school-aged, a fascination for Band-Aids has developed. And I was never one to pass out Band-Aids at home so I’m quite intrigued where this Band-Aid interest came from. Could it be because of these bandages now look like fancy stickers? There is quite a range of different characters to choose from—Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, Spider Man, Scooby-Doo. Who wouldn’t want to sport one these cool bandages? Because nothing says, “I’m injured but still stylin'” like a Barbie-wrapped finger!

Breakfast in bed starts a day full of gifts on Mother's Day... 😉

I laughed reading Jamee’s post about her very first Mother’s Day present from her then three year old daughter. Given that Jamee’s a fabulous graphic designer (one of her many talents), I understood why her husband awaited her reaction with some trepidation — but mom’s love transcends even some of the tackiest style disasters! 😉

Alec in le•top, with his tricyle and...is he holding a bug?

Alec (Yellow Turtle baby model!) in le•top, circa 1993, with his tricycle and...is he holding a bug?

J. at Yellow Turtle found a “vintage” photo of her son in le•top and sent it over for fun. I loved the old tricycle and the whole composition of this photo; the un-mowed grass, the dandelions, the lone tennis shoe and little Alec looking like the quintessential, all-American portrait of little boy having a great summer! Of course, I wanted to share with everyone on the blog, so I asked J. for a more recent photo of her son, Alec (now 18), and she sent over a few. I noted to her that there seemed to be a cycling theme, and she said her niece, Alec’s cousin, has MS, so Alec has been doing the Bike MS ride since he was 12! Alec and his dad do this ride every year. Last year Alec raised over $2000 – they both rode 75 miles each day, in the hills of Vermont! J. and her daughter are the cooler girls – they wait at the rest-stops with drinks and food. Great family support! We’re looking forward to photos from this year’s Bike MS in Vermont which will be held August 8-9, 2009…Go, Alec!

Jordynne modeling her dress from the le•top Bloomin' Beauty collection

Jordynne modeling her dress from the le•top Bloomin' Beauty collection, Spring 09

Our most recent Secret Contest winner sent us a wonderful gift. We love seeing babies and kids wearing our clothes, so when Steph T. sent us a photo of her daughter wearing our le•top Bloomin’ Beauty dress, we’re the ones who felt like we won a contest! It was wonderful of  Steph to tell us how much she loved the dress she won, simply for participating in le•top blog. The best part, though, was hearing that Jordynne loved it, too, and of her choosing to wear it to the Spring Party at Kindergarten. We can just imagine her twirling around at her party!

siennaballerina….submitted (last night) by mom and reader: Jess

Poor Sienna (15 months) has had very loose stools all week from taking antibiotics for an ear infection, and along with that pleasure comes the most horrible diaper rash I have ever seen. She was in such excruciating pain that I thought I’d let her roam free for a little before bed, figuring that with 95% tile and wood floors in our house, she shouldn’t be able to do too much damage. Never underestimate toddlers, as some of you probably know much better than I do because…

She found a nice, comfortable spot on the rug to lay a hefty turd! I didn’t see her do the deed, but my nose led me straight to the evidence. It was a clean break, which was definitely a change from her usual this week. I was so relieved and glad that I could just pick it right up with no stain, that I didn’t think to look around for any lingering mess. I thoroughly (and probably too obsessively) cleaned the spot and slapped a diaper on my little angel! A few hours later I remember my side-tracked laundry basket waiting for folding, next to the couch, on our…rug….

Too exhausted and just so ready for bed, I decided that I’d leave the folding for the morning and selectively grabbed our freshly clean (and only set of bedsheets). I scooped them up in my arms and held them to my face to smell the freshly laundered scent, as fresh, clean sheets happen to be one of my favorite things! I couldn’t smell the bounty freshness and figured it meant the poo smell was lingering in the rug and possibly permeating the rest of the house still?? I now see the flaws in my naively wishful thinking, but like I said, I love climbing into a newly made bed of fresh and clean sheets. I mustered the last stretch of energy to make the bed, and at approximately 10:45pm, I got to our bedroom and began neatly tucking the corners of the fitted sheet, when I discovered the rest of Sienna’s  “present”  smeared right in the center of the white valley of freshness!

My motherly intuition tells me that after working hard on her great release,  Sienna took a seat in the nearby laundry basket to rest. I’m writing all of you because something inside me knows this must be absolutely hilarious, and I hope that I’ll read this tomorrow morning and be able to laugh too. But after a crazy week of little sleep and nasty colds, right now I just can’t stop shaking my head and pathetically chuckling, as I sit here waiting for the sheets in the wash cycle. I did mention we don’t have a spare set of sheets, right????

Sienna and her mom in earlier and cleaner times!

Sienna and her mom, Jess, in earlier and cleaner times!

I do have to say that my one silver lining here is that I think I now have a very convincing argument to make to my dear husband  as to why we really should have a spare set of sheets!…And for little Sienna, who always keeps me smiling even when I’m beyond my point of exhaustion!
