My mother-in-law has always said that my daughter is the “spitting image” of my husband. I used to think she said that because she loves her son, and naturally sees him in Lilah. But after seeing “Mini-Me Fathers Day Contest” winners – Jaiden and her Dad’s picture – I started thinking that my husband and our daughter really do look alike.

Evolutionarily speaking, I’ve heard that most kids are “made” to look like the fathers in their first year of life. Fathers need that instantly recognizable connection so, in turn, they will protect their offspring. (Generally the maternal connection is made early on since mom has already had 10 months to bond with baby.) This may all be an old wives tale but then again, maybe not, because Lilah and her daddy are quite the dynamic duo… Wonder Twin powers – ACTIVATE!

Recently my mother-in-law sent me some photos of my husband at Lilah’s exact age (2 ½.) I realize now that she wasn’t exaggerating about how alike they look!

What do you think?

On the flip side, the older our daughters become the more they look (and act) like their moms … even if they didn’t when they were younger. Yes, for better or worse, we’re all turning into our mothers!  I attribute this to mom’s role as a model for their daughters’ gestures and characteristics.  Even if my little one doesn’t look like me (…yet) she definitely acts like me when she stands with her hands on her hips, or pretend-talks on the phone. I am happy to be an example for her, and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure I am a positive one. Trust me, I’ll know right away if I’m not, because… well, she’s my little mirror!

Do you find this to be true in your family?

Our most recent Secret Contest winner, Amber, took a bit of work to get a hold of, but she finally gave us a ring the other day from Texas…much to my surprise since her mobile phone number has a California area code! The Texas native, (who went St. Mary’s in Moraga, CA – hence the area code) had moved out here for college, met her husband, had a couple of babies and then, two years ago, decided that Texas is where they would like to raise their family.

Amber was telling me all about her two little gentlemen and how she can’t wait to get her hands on the le•top Sunnyhill Farm shirt and short set. Her two year old loves farms and farm animals (hello! they live in Texas — what a perfect place for a boy who loves farms!), so she is sure that he is just going to go wild for the short set, and so are we! I guess he will really have mommy to thank for this one, and we thank you, too, Amber, for your delicious Chocolate Cake-in-a-Cup recipe. I tried it myself, and it was nothing short of delightful, not to mention easy!

A hand-colored heart, to which the first pack of gum was taped...

A couple of years ago, my then-5-year-old daughter asked what I wanted for Mother’s Day.  Since money was tight, our house was a mess (in part because we had too many “things” already), and I honestly couldn’t think of anything I needed or wanted anyway, I just asked that she and her brothers make something for me.  Pre-school was always great about helping the Kids make gifts, and I treasure all of the holiday items they’ve made through the years.  Apparently my Kids were more observant than I gave them credit for because, when I arrived at daycare to pick them up one afternoon, I noticed a big poster board on which the teachers had written responses to “What does your Mommy want for Mother’s Day?”  There were nearly 20 responses, each one-upping the last:  “Dinner; Dinner in a restaurant; Dinner and a Show; Spa Day; Weekend in Tahoe; Earrings; Diamond Earrings; Hearts on Fire Diamonds; A Convertible.”  Then I saw my Kids’ entry:  “Gum”.  It was perfect, not only for the should’ve-been-embarrassed-but-was-actually-quite-proud grin I couldn’t get off my face the rest of the day, but because I really do love gum.  Flowers are temporary, fashion is fleeting, but gum has the shelf-life of Twinkies, which means it’ll be around forever.  When I no longer have the teeth to chew it, I’ll still have a big, silly grin on my face every time I find a pack of gum tucked away on a shelf in my closet, next to the half-painted jewelry box from 2008, the scented homemade bath salts from 2004, and the small, multi-colored, possibly ceramic blob from 2003.  Maybe this year I’ll get cinnamon.

...on the back side, Anna (5) signed her name and Freddy's (3), and my husband traced Jeffrey's (1) hand.

Jake and Kate with Daddy

Jake and big sister, Kate, with Daddy

We’re very excited to learn that one of our le•top and rabbitmoon Favorites Contest winners, Marissa C., gave birth to a tiny bundle of joy recently. Jake Thomas arrived on Monday, March 23 at 7:43 am. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 1 ounce and was 18 1/2 inches long. Happy Birthday, Jake! Marissa wrote to say he is still too small to wear the clothes she chose as part of her contest win, but as soon as he’s big enough, we’ll be getting more photos. Thanks for sharing, Marrissa, and congratulations to you and your family!

Rad Reptile

Bold reptile shirt and woven explorer shorts from le•top Rad Reptiles Collection. Click on photo to see more from this fun collection.

Our third Secret Contest winner (for having the most hits as a Daily Darling) was Marc and Kristin C.‘s son, Caden. This little boy so entertained us as a Daily Darling that we made him our mascot for our “le•top Takes: Out of the Mouths of Babes” series. And we didn’t really send him slimy reptiles as his prize, but this fun outfit from our Rad Reptiles collection (le•top Spring 09). This collection is in stores now, so use our store locator to find a le•top retailer near you. Caden lives in Boston, so we’ll probably have to wait for the weather to warm up there, but we can’t wait to see Caden in this outfit!

Remember that we have Secret Contests going on all the time. Because they’re secret, you never know you’re in a contest until we announce the winners! You might win for any reason, but it’s always because you spend time with us here at le•top blog, and you let us know you’re out there by commenting, submitting photos, sharing stories, recipes, funny quotes from your kids or grandkids…so please keep shareing with us…you might be the next winner!

Robert was our last and final Favorites Contest winner, and as I did with all the other winners, I helped him fill his virtual shopping cart of $500 worth of le•top and rabbit moon clothes…and he was so cute! Throughout our conversation, he kept repeating, “I never win anything, not even at the casinos!”, and,  “This is so fun! I would never have guessed 4 years ago that I would be into doing something like this!” What a dad! 🙂

Awww...coordinating outfits from the le•top Twinkle Collection for sisters, Ruby and Mary. le•top's Flower Power shirt and skirt set (bottom left). Dress from the Bougainvillea Collection, rabbit moon (bottom right).

Robert has two daughters, Ruby, 4 months, and Mary, 4 years. As you can see from the photos of some of Robert’s final selections, Mary loves dresses and skirts! Her dad told us that she will not wear pants…except for the time she and her mom were out shopping, and she said, “Mommy, I am taking this home!” “This” was the rabbit moon Orchid Tracksuit (obviously the kid has great taste). Cute! We’re looking forward to seeing the photos of Ruby and Mary modeling le•top and rabbit moon. Can’t wait!

Congratulations to our four winners, and thank you again to everyone who entered our Favorites Contest for the Fall 2008 Collections. All of you made this a fun and exciting contest for us! Do you think we might have a contest for our Spring 2009 Collections? Hmmmm…stay tuned! 😉
