Last week was a big week for Lilah (and I) as it was her first day to attend preschool. The preparation alone was enough to send me off the edge, but her reactions were going to make or break me. I know at times I may seem a bit emotional about all of these changes in my child’s life, but Lilah is my one-and-only. All of this (parenting) is new to me and incredibly special – it is the only time I will be experiencing it with my own child.

Lilah carrying her cooler to her first day of preschool.

It was all a bit of a blur. We had to get a sheet and a blanket, a full set of clothes (with her name written inside), buy just the right size mini-cooler (to fit in the cubby), and have all the emergency, immunization and other doctor’s paperwork completed and authorized. I then had to figure out what my little girl would eat on a daily basis and prepare her lunch/snacks accordingly (daycare used to feed her). All set and ready to go!

We had been preparing Lilah for her big day, but telling her that she’s a “big girl” now and ready to move on and make more friends. She was so excited. Thursday morning rolled around, we were up early. She didn’t fight putting on her clothes (though they were not the ones I wanted her to wear :)) and we were all prepared. When we arrived at school everything seemed to change. (da da da duuuuhhh)

When we walked in the door she was glued to me. Everyone was so nice to her, but she refused to even look at anyone. Then the waterworks started. This was not going to be easy. It didn’t matter what the teachers said, she would not have anything to do with them. After a painful 10 minutes, I tore myself away from her and headed out the door. Though I wanted to cry I knew it was time to move her to preschool and had to trust that I made the right decision.

Of course, when I picked her up she was happy and smiling. She excitedly told me about her day of gymnastics, puzzles, her cot, and playing with the train tracks. She skipped out to the car. Yaaayyy!!!! I was thrilled that she had such a good time. The next morning I did not anticipate the crying that ensued. It was worse than the day before and made it even harder to leave. When I returned to pick her up they told me that within 15 minutes all was well and she was a happy camper. Today was easier though there were still tears. I’m told it will probably be like this through the week. Hopefully it will pass sooner than later.

Miranda proudly accepts her diploma in Le Top's Sweetheart Butterfly drop waist dress.

My daughter has passed another milestone… Kindergarten! The beginning of the 2009-2010 school year was a day to remember. I dropped off my baby in her classroom with other nervous little children who were sharing their first experience of school. Then the teacher shuffled out all the anxious parents and closed the door. It seemed like a long year full of homework, projects and field trips, but yet it also seemed like the first day of school was just yesterday. In a blink of an eye, I now have a first grader.

Has it really been a year since “Grajuration Day“?

This event was so much more different than graduating from preschool. First of all, these six-year olds are sassy and smart. They learned A LOT this year, not only in the classroom but also from their friends. There was so much attitude in the air, for many reasons:

  1. It’s summertime, which means no more homework. They can stay up as late as they want and sleep in. (HA!)
  2. Next year they are first graders which means they get to have two recesses, and they get to play on the big kids’ play structure.
  3. There are cupcakes after the graduation.

As happy as this day was for the kids, it was bittersweet for the parents. I am happy that she did so well in school and has made a lot of friends, but I am sad that she’s growing up so fast. All I can do is take a mental photograph of this day and cherish it. Tomorrow is another day, and I’m sure summer will be a drag because she’ll be bored not seeing her friends every day and wonder why Mommy and Daddy are still working, and shouldn’t we all be on summer vacation.

food_badI started feeding my son solids at 5 months. I get a kick out of the faces he makes when he tries a new food for the first time. With spoon in one hand, I slowly feed him. Then armed with a camera in the other, I snap a picture to capture his zany expressions! My favorite so far is the avocado shot. His face just looks like he’s saying, “What the heck are you feeding me, Lady?” But I’m not purely into the funny faces. I also love it when his face breaks into a smile because he’s tasting something absolutely delicious. Like the carrot shot. He really does love them carrots! He was practically standing in his high chair to get another spoonful!

Paulo in le•top Walking with Dinosaurs long-sleeved shirt and overalls. So proud to be standing on his own!

It was just a regular morning. My husband and I woke up and got the kids ready. Usually we each take a child and get him/her dressed. Then while Miranda puts her shoes on, we place Paulo in the crib so that we can get ourselves dressed. It was the usual morning routine. But this particular morning, we heard Miranda yelling, “Mom, Dad, come here!!!” We thought perhaps Paulo had hurt himself or that she saw an insect in her bathroom, so we both rushed out of our bedroom and followed the sound of her voice.

“He’s standing! He’s standing! Paulo is standing!” Oh, my! I thought crawling at 5 months was early, but standing at 6 months?! At this rate he’ll be walking at 7 months!
