Big Sister Little Brother Playtime (Miranda in Flamingo Bay from le•top's 2009 Summer Collection-see bottom of post to view more of the Collection)

I don’t know how many times the words “Don’t smother your brother” leave my lips each day. Miranda just LOVES her brother so much that she can’t seem to keep her hands off him. I am fortunate that she is old enough so I can rely on her to entertain her little brother for short segments of time, especially if I need a potty break or make us lunch. But sometimes, I need to keep my eye on her. If I turn my back for a second, I’ll discover her squeezing his chubby cheeks until drool or spit-up has covered up the front of his entire shirt. Or “playing with him” means she has taken both his hands and has shaken them vigorously almost popping his shoulders out of their sockets! Paulo’s response is usually with smiles and giggles because he loves all the attention she gives him. But sometimes, he’s screaming because his big sister has hugged him a little too long that he’s begging to be set free.

One day while playing, I guess Paulo had had enough. He grabbed a handful of her hair and yanked… HARD! So hard, Miranda was the one screaming. I should have helped her free, but instead I laughed out loud and grabbed my camera to capture her day of defeat.

FINAL SCORE: Miranda 37, Paulo 1

bballfansI’ve finally realized how I came by my love and appreciation of professional sports of all kinds. As a little girl, my first love was hoops and hockey, but these days, it’s most definitely baseball (OK, in the fall, of course it’ll be football!). I have lots of memories of going to see games or watching it on TV…seated next to my father…who patiently explained the games and the rules to me. What I thought was my own natural tendency for sports and athleticism as the chief source for my understanding and love for sports, was in fact seeded and nurtured by my dad. My father passed away a few years ago, and I miss him in ways that I never imagined possible, but he handed down to me a love that I share in common with my brother. My brother gets downright giddy when we talk baseball…and it’s like we’re little kids again…

big-sisWhen I was pregnant with my first child, my husband and I decided to let our families know on Thanksgiving Day. We gave our parents wrapped presents with “I love my Grandma” and “I love my Grandpa” bibs and let them figure it out. It took about half a second since they’ve been asking when we were going to give them grandchildren. (The pressure!)

The next time we were pregnant, we wanted to be more creative. My dad’s birthday was coming up and my mom had planned for the entire family to have brunch aboard one of the San Francisco’s tour trains. So instead of yelling our announcement over the railroad tracks, my husband and I decided to be more sly. I made a special t-shirt for our daughter to wear that said, “I’m going to be a BIG sister!” and see how long it would take for the family to read it. The perfect opportunity presented itself when the train photographer came by and asked the family if we wanted a picture. So while the grandparents and grandchildren were getting situated, I asked Miranda to take her sweater off. Sadly, no one took notice. Then the photographer said, “Oh, what a cute shirt!” Finally, my mom noticed. Everyone was screaming and yelling, and asking if it was true. It was hilarious!

Since creativity runs in the family, my brother and sister-in-law gave us their special announcement by telling us they were going to be in a Dr. Pepper commercial. So as the family gathered around the giant plasma screen over Easter to watch their TV debut, this is what we saw. We were all confused because we didn’t see any Dr. Pepper in the video. The last image took a second or two to sink in. And once it did, the video became an unforgettable announcement, mixed with tears of joy and peals of laughter. Classic!
