Last Saturday, our day for chores, grocery shopping, gardening and the like, was pleasantly interrupted by a call from a close family friend. His family member was moving to Washington and had a playhouse her kids had outgrown; could we use it?  Our response: “Love to!”  The next thought: “Where will we put it?” Our smallish yard is pretty full with our large edible garden, flowers, patio furniture, lots of gardening equipment, a grill, and lumber for an upcoming fencing project!

PlayhouseI tend to live by Tim Gunn’s motto of “Make it Work.”  A few hours and an aching back later everything was in its new organized place and our yard actually looked bigger! Our friend showed up with the pieces of the house and by the time Lilah woke up from a much needed nap she had a new playhouse. She was so excited to have a ‘new home!’  We put potted roses outside the kitchen window to give it a homey feel – it’s perfect!!! Lilah loved it so much that, even though the fog had rolled in and a cold wind blew through our yard, she insisted we have a tea party. Luckily one of the walls pulls back to make it an indoor/outdoor dining table so I could be in the house without actually being “in” the house. I know she will get years of enjoyment out of this little abode. I am grateful we can enjoy the playhouse, rather than adding to the landfill!  Tea Anyone?

Nate with his Diapermatic 2000

Nate with his Diapermatic 2000

A Texas reader sent this in, and we loved thinking about disposable diapers from a slightly different perspective!

Nate (pictured) won 3rd place in his 3rd grade “Invention Convention” science fair. His invention?  The Diapermatic 2000 – a remote controlled diaper dispenser!

This is an invention for all those kids who are responsible for taking out the trash, and have to deal with the ‘unpleasant’ aspects of younger siblings in diapers. After all…who likes to take out dirty diapers? Not Nate!

Here’s how it works:

1. Place dirty diaper in trash bag.

2. Place bag on hook of remote control helicopter.

3. Fly helicopter with its ‘load’ to the trash and push release button over trash can.

I think there are great things in Nate’s future!

sleeptoysStuffed animals! How many can one child get?! I used to “collect” stuffed animals as I child until I was in high school, then I had to “send them away to a farm.” Who am I kidding? I either sold them at a garage sale or donated them to the Goodwill. Of course, my daughter has TONS of stuffed animals. In this picture (when she was 3 years old), she took all her stuffed animals and lined them up. Then she asked me to take a picture of her with her “friends.” Haha! How could I resist? It was too cute to pass up.

So as much as I would love to “send one animal to the farm” each month without her knowing, I just couldn’t. She LOVES them all and named them all. In fact, she also sleeps with a different “friend” each night.

Here is this week’s line up (as far as I know):

lineup

When we go on vacation somewhere, she carefully selects one to take along on the trip. “Hmm… Mommy, which sleep toy should I bring to San Diego? Can I bring two sleep toys so that Mr. Green Bear doesn’t get lonely in case I forget him in the car?” (Adorable, right?)

top-horseI was thinking about the top – the toy that is. I remember sitting on the floor, concentrating on pushing the handle up and down, watching the horses do a run around the obstacle course inside the plastic bubble. The faster the handle went, the faster the horse went, it was fascinating! My toys were simple and few in number. One white plastic poodle that reminded me of rice pudding – hence loved dearly. One scratchy bear stuffed with wood chips. One plastic creature with a blue body and a giant orange head. (I still don’t know what that was). One stuffed bunny with an orange shirt, often making cameo appearances in childhood photos. The shortage of toys during the Soviet years almost seemed like a plot to promote reading, and in some cases imagination and creativity in future engineers, doctors, rocket scientists, and even artists and designers. At six, I was making puppet goats out of paper, and nailing wooden boards together to make a boat. In the spring, I set sail with an empty match box in the mini “river” that ran in the space between the concrete road and the sidewalk. I’d follow it all the way around the neighborhood until it would reach its final destination and disappear in the drain. I didn’t have much, but whatever I had seemed to be enough.topotuska

binsThere’s definitely something wrong with me. I’m either obsessed or possessed! I’m 37 weeks pregnant and I can’t seem to stop organizing, cleaning, and putting things in order. This is like nesting to the 100th degree! It’s 2:37 AM, and I’ve done everything that I can do as far as organizing and reorganizing my daughter, Miranda’s old clothes and placing them in marked bins by size. Shouldn’t I be sleeping and resting instead?

I’m trying to get things in order before the baby arrives. And it seems like once I cross something off my To-do list, two more items have been added. I know that I’m anal retentive, but this nesting thing has made me even more obsessive. It’s quite maddening to witness. I feel like I’m watching myself go insane. (OK… that sounded insane!)

Last week, I caught up with my scrapbooks, ordered any digital albums that had been sitting on my desktop, and bought a new baby book for the little munchkin. I disinfected all the old baby toys that were in storage. I packed (and repacked) my hospital bag. I packed my daughter’s overnight bag. Every time I wash a load of baby clothes, I find something else to wash. Aaaaarrghhhh! It’s never ending. I need to stop! But I don’t…

Last weekend was dedicated to cleaning and organizing. I cleaned all three bathrooms (while doing four loads of laundry) because my husband was too slow to get to them. He was busy installing the baby car seat, washing both of our cars, dusting, and vacuuming. (You’d think he could manage to get to the bathrooms and the laundry done as well, huh?) And when he was done with all that, I yelled at him for not spending time with Miranda. So I made him take her to the park. (Oh, the mood swings!) Three more weeks… three more weeks…

gmwelcomeSweetie and I were in freezing cold New York City this past weekend. Brrrrrr! Wow, I really don’t know how people survive in those kind of temperatures. We got to walk around in a beautiful snowfall on Saturday afternoon, though…the kind of snowfall so soft and thick and heavy that when it falls on your face, it feels as if the big flakes are caressing you. It was enchanting. Further enchantment was waiting for us when we tucked into warm and welcoming Granny-Made at 381 Amsterdam Avenue.

Ooooh...aaaaah...adorable and cute and fun treasures everywhere!!!

Ooooh...aaaaah...adorable and cute and fun treasures everywhere!!!

This unbelievably charming store is full of very unique and wondrous things for babies and children (and women! more on that next week)…so of course we found our le•top and rabbit moon clothes there! Michael and Adele, the brother-sister duo of Granny-Made, instantly became our personal shoppers…they just innately seem to know what you might like, to better help you find the perfect purchase. I saw this happen over and over again with other customers in the store. We all admired each others’ purchases and marveled at the variety of offerings at Granny-Made. Ruthie (a huge talent in sweater design!) was also there and added to the conviviality. And of course, Gracie, Michael’s 6 year old Havanese was there orchestrating the whole show. (more…)
