On a road trip very late in the evening a little girl was sleeping soundly in her car seat. Her parents turned onto a gravel road. After a few minutes her dad saw a rabbit hop across their path and exclaimed, “Wabbit Season!” Within a couple of seconds a voice from the back seat shouted.

Duck Season!”

Make this hysterical cake for daddy this Father’s Day – a remote control cake! Of course, I am not a proponent of promoting television watching, but in my home growing up, my dad definitely had “control” over the TV’s remote control…or he would fall asleep with it in his hand where you couldn’t move it. Ha!  Bake this cake or even make a big brownie sheet and decorate it with your children for this Sunday’s Father’s Day!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 baked 13- by 9-inch cake or brownie
  • Dad’s favorite frosting
  • Gel icing
  • Various candies

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.     Slightly trim the long sides of a baked 13- by 9-inch cake or brownie to resemble a remote control.

2.     Spread on a layer of Dad’s favorite frosting, then press on various candies (we used Skittles, M&M’s, and Spree candies) for control buttons.

3.     Finally, use gel icing to add numbers, arrows, or other symbols to some of the buttons.

Looking for the perfect Father’s Day present? This six-piece desktop decoration showcases family photos on two sides when it’s assembled and doubles as a brainteaser when Dad needs a distraction.

You will need:

  • 6 (1 1/2-inch) wooden cubes
  • Acrylic paints and paintbrushes
  • Rubber band
  • Thin black marker
  • 2 photos (3×5 or 4×6)
  • Double-sided adhesive sheets
  • Scissor
  • X-Acto knife
  • Letter stickers (optional)

How To:

  1. Paint the sides of each cube, leaving the top and bottom bare.
  2. When they’re dry, arrange them in a rectangle, unpainted sides up, and wrap a rubber band around them to hold them together.

    Step 2

Using the marker, trace the rectangle onto the picture side of each photo, making sure everyone’s faces fit within the rectangle. Apply a double-sided adhesive sheet to the back of each photo and cut along the tracing lines. Peel off the adhesive’s backing and adhere one photo to the top of the cubes and one to the bottom (since it’s a bit tricky, it’s a parent’s job).

  3. Divide the photos by cutting along the edges of the cubes with the X-Acto knife (another job for a parent). Add letter stickers if desired.

Paulo (wearing the Le Top "Under the Sea" pull over hoodie shirt with a red crab appliqué) and Miranda playing on the beach.

It’s only March here in the Bay Area but the weather has been so warm and sunny (with a few rainy days in between) that we’ve actually been hitting the beach since January! Last week we went to Pacific Grove. My husband was at a 3-day seminar and since he was staying at a swanky hotel, we decided to “join” him and enjoy the amenities that fancy lodging offers, such as a salt water pool and hot tub, breakfast buffets, and free freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Mmmmm!

While Daddy was sitting in an uncomfortable chair in a dimly-lit conference room, we were outdoors absorbing sun rays along the coast at the Asilomar State Beach. It was sunny but a little chilly and I wasn’t sure how long we would last at the beach. But as soon as we laid our blanket on the sand and the kids dumped out all their sand toys, the chill in the air seemed to dissipate. My kids were ready to go jump in the ocean! (But we didn’t. That water is FREEZING!)

After a couple hours, we packed it up and drove back to the hotel where we spent the afternoon swimming in the pool, then in the hot tub, then in the pool, then the hot tub (you get the picture), until Daddy came to retrieve us for dinner. What a fun day! Daddy should go to more conferences at ritzy hotels.

When daddy’s at work, have him think about the kiddos and the family! Let kids redo this basic office staple as a gift for Dad — their messages will last well beyond Father’s Day.

How To:

Wrap a rubber band around a notepad cube and have kids write greetings and make drawings on two sides with a broad, pointy marker. (Fine tips will get caught between the pages.) Move band, and decorate the other two sides. Tie the notepad with a colorful ribbon. As an added gift, slide in a pen.

Put a personal spin on a Father’s Day card: Add a photo that twirls on a string. Kids can pick their favorite snapshots of themselves and glue them back to back, or use only one and cover the other side with colorful paper. Then all that’s left to do is write a special message to Dad to tell him you love him! Quick, simple and a memory that will last forever!

Card How-To:

  1. Cut out a sheet of colorful paper with a width that’s divisible by three; ours is 12 inches (the height is 7). Use a ruler to divide width into three equal parts; fold paper at those points. Unfold. Fold left flap over middle (these panels will be card’s front), then fold both in half (use a bone folder, if you like). Draw a half circle (or half square) over outer fold as shown; cut out, cutting through all layers, just outside line.

  1. Trim cutouts. Lay one on photo; trace. Cut out photo; glue onto cutout.
  2. Glue string between photo and the other cutout (or another photo). Place string in fold of middle flap, positioning photo in hole; glue left flap to middle, trapping string inside. Trim string.

Decorate to suit Dad!

“I only want mommy to dress me” is a common request from many a toddler.  Whether it’s a daily routine like getting dressed, taking a bath or being put to bed, a child’s determination that “only mommy can do it!” can leave dad feeling rejected and mom feeling SO TIRED.

Children might become more interested in one particular parent for a variety of reasons. It may be that, in terms of personality, a child might wind up preferring one parent to the other. If one parent is full of energy all the time, an energetic toddler might be more drawn to them. Another cause of a toddler preferring one parent to the other can be the old saying that familiarity fosters contempt. If one parent stays home with the child all day long, the toddler might get much more excited when the other parent is around, just because he or she doesn’t get to see that parent as much as he does the other.

When you notice your toddler preferring one parent to the other, you should take some time to try to figure out why this is the case. If you are the parent that is not preferred, watch her activities and interests. Also watch how you tend to react to these. Also, this is a good time to teach your child what unconditional parental love means.

If this sounds familiar, read on for tips on how to cope if you’re not winning the popularity contest for your baby’s affection.

  1. Accept It.
Like anything else in life, acceptance is KEY! It is most likely a phase, and not an uncommon one at that. Soon Daddy or Mommy will be jealous of the other. J
  2. Talk about It.
If you genuinely have hurt feelings over the issue, talk to your spouse about it. Avoid blaming your hubby because he didn’t cause the situation, and in all truth, he probably feels overwhelmed and super tired.
  3. Know that you’re not alone.
No matter how you may feel, rest assured that you are not the first parent to feel rejected by your little one.

However you decide to deal with your feelings about the current situation, know that it is not your fault. It’s a quite natural phase that your baby or toddler will eventually outgrow. And hey, don’t we all want a little down time anyways as parents?
