Babies’ brains develop quickly during their first 12 months. Their brains are rapidly absorbing and acquiring new skills and understanding from their interactions with adults and anything in their surroundings. Right now my boyfriend’s niece, Ari, 9-months-old, is learning to wave “bye-bye” and “clap hands.” I find myself sitting alone with her saying “Clap HANDS! Clap HANDS!…boom, boom, boom!” It is amazing how much you can teach a child by signing…thinking about it — Have you ever wondered why parents are so amazed and happy when their baby learns to wave “bye-bye”? This is one of the first innate forms of communication between a baby and a parent.
