The Real D: 3-D Glasses!
The other night my husband, his brothers and I went to see Pixar’s newest release “Up” in 3-D. It was fantastic! And can I just say that 3-D technology has come a long, long way. The last “movie” I saw in 3-D was probably Michael Jackson’s “Captain E.O.” video at Disney World in the late 80’s!
We were supposed to see an earlier, non-3-D showing, but my husband insisted that we watch “Up” in 3-D. “There is no other way to watch it,” he said. So we shelled out an extra $2.50 to get the corny Real D: 3-D glasses, and waited around an extra hour for the 3-D showing.
It was worth the extra money and the wait. The depth perception you get from the 3-D technology is awe-inspiring. There are parts in the movie where the characters are going over a cliff and you kind of lean back in your seat, as if you were on the edge of the cliff with them. I was expecting a lot of “things” to jump out of the screen, and they did a couple of times, but not nearly as much as I had anticipated, which for me was a good thing. I am not keen on bugs digitally launching into my face.
We all really enjoyed the movie-viewing experience and the story line was flawless and heartwarming. There were definitely some tears shed (yes, they would have been shed from yours truly!), but also some deep belly laughter. The kids in the theatre were definitely entertained and their attention was held (i.e. no screaming and running around). Overall a great film and a great experience. SQUIRREL! Who’s seen this movie? What did you think?
I am a sucker for any movie with talking animals or bugs. I cannot wait to see “UP” especially in 3-D. G-Force (talking Guinea Pigs – you gotta luv it) a 3-D film from Disney will be making its debut in July. I can hardly wait….
See you at the movies!
My family went to see “Up” and loved it! We didn’t get to see the 3-D version, but nonetheless, we were all drawn into the story. Being a designer and working on the computer, I can truly appreciate the time and effort the Pixar geniuses put into making these films! (Believe me, doing what they do is way more sophisticated than working in 2-D!) Plus, they KNOW how to tell a good story… you empathize with the characters so much that you forget they are all animation! (Do they know dogs, or what?!)
Our family also loves the “short” animations that they run before the feature movie… check out “Pixar Short Films, volume 1” on DVD. You can see all the first “shorts” they created, and how their expertise and technology advanced through the years. Awesome!
Marice! We loved the short before the film! My husband looked at me radomly a couple days after we saw it and said “I really liked the short before Up!” He is pretty random anyway, but that one struck a chord with him. They ran a preview of the next Ice Age movie as well, with a “short-esque” trailer and that got us all excited too! (though I can NOT say that Sid the Sloth is anywhere near my favorite character!) 🙂
My husband is a K-9 handler for the Solano County Sheriff’s Department. He and his dog, Basco, and the rest of the K-9 unit were invited to Pixar about 2 years ago to record the dogs barking! At the time, the Deputy’s did not know what movie the dogs where barking for due to confidentiality so it was exciting to find out (years later) that it was for the movie ‘Up’! The Deputy’s and their dogs had a great time at the Pixar studio.
The team recently went to a press release, so look out for them in your local newspaper! Here is yesterday’s article from the Contra Costa Times http://www.contracostatimes.com/news/ci_12567532?nclick_check=1
Robyn, that is so cool.
