Do you still have one of these driving around your neighborhood?
As a child, I wasn’t ever allowed to get ice cream from ice cream trucks…I know, weird…don’t ask. On the other hand, there’s Sweetie, who must have, I think, lived in one. We were visiting friends in Florida recently when he jumped up, wildly shouting, “What’s that?!?” and flew out the door. Seriously, I thought a house was on fire across the street. But no, there he stood, excitedly waiting by the curb, counting his change. SEVERAL minutes later, an ice cream truck appeared. To me, this was akin to a dog’s whistle…only Sweetie heard the ice cream truck’s tinkling, beckoning melody, which was MILES away.
There is an ice cream cart in our neigborhood that signals it’s arrival with a bell (think bicycle bell ring). We also have one that sells corn on a stick slathered in mayo and parmesaen cheese. It sound weird but it’s good. They signal with a horn that sounds like a clown is approaching. My daughter can tell the difference between the sounds and always tells me she wants whatever is headed our way.
Ice cream man! ICE CREAM MAN!
I haven’t seen one of those in our neighborhood. I think our Home Owners Association would ban them – if they’re not banned already. 🙂
Oh Yes, the “Ice Cream Truck” I have many, many memories of this…
My most vivid memory is, ALWAYS running frantically around the house screaming “MOOOOMMMMMM! I need money!!!! The Ice Cream Truck is coming!! HUURRRYYYYYY!!!!!” OR When my friends and I would pray our parents wouldn’t come out of the house cuz we wanted so bad to buy candy cigarettes, and we were forbidden to have them….then we would go and hide in the trees and pretend that we could smoke. OR the one time my neighbor drove her son around town looking for the Ice Cream Truck because he had missed it and all the other brothers got Ice Cream…they didn’t find the truck- poor guy!
Actually funny story, my family became somewhat friends with the Ice Cream Man because one time (long before cell phones) he needed to call and check on his wife, who ended up being in labor! Every time after that, he would stop and say hi and chat with them about this and that.
Did you ever wonder how the ice cream man had popsicles one could not find anywhere else. My very favorite was the giant green baseball mitt made of some unknown green colored ice cream with a gumball in the midde. I loved my red stained lips from the gumball.
Julie, I do find that amazing…I mean, why not sell this stuff in the store? When I finally was able to experience getting ice cream from the truck (in high school…I had my friend show me the ropes in “ordering”!), I absolutely LOVED the bomb pops. Shaped like a rocket, it was red, white and blue. Turned my lips blue, but I didn’t mind! Mmmmm…I loved those things! Giant green baseball mitt, though? I don’t remember seeing that kind!
YES! The Pink Panther, Ninja Turtle, Baseball Mitt… ALL my favorites! All made of some unknown, super soft, super melty ice cream, that you can’t find anywhere else! My Husband’s favorite was the It’s-It, which you can now get in the grocery store. OH!! And my sister just told me she thinks you can find the Baseball Mitt and Ninja Turtle in 7-11’s.
I love the Ice Cream Man!!!!
P.S. Erin- I think it’s call the “Astro-Pop”!
Ooooh…yes!! Exactly! I have no idea what you’re talking about as far as the other ones. I’ll have to google Baseball Mitt because I’m burning with curiosity!
I love the Choco Taco!!!
