When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband and I decided to let our families know on Thanksgiving Day. We gave our parents wrapped presents with “I love my Grandma” and “I love my Grandpa” bibs and let them figure it out. It took about half a second since they’ve been asking when we were going to give them grandchildren. (The pressure!)
The next time we were pregnant, we wanted to be more creative. My dad’s birthday was coming up and my mom had planned for the entire family to have brunch aboard one of the San Francisco’s tour trains. So instead of yelling our announcement over the railroad tracks, my husband and I decided to be more sly. I made a special t-shirt for our daughter to wear that said, “I’m going to be a BIG sister!” and see how long it would take for the family to read it. The perfect opportunity presented itself when the train photographer came by and asked the family if we wanted a picture. So while the grandparents and grandchildren were getting situated, I asked Miranda to take her sweater off. Sadly, no one took notice. Then the photographer said, “Oh, what a cute shirt!” Finally, my mom noticed. Everyone was screaming and yelling, and asking if it was true. It was hilarious!
Since creativity runs in the family, my brother and sister-in-law gave us their special announcement by telling us they were going to be in a Dr. Pepper commercial. So as the family gathered around the giant plasma screen over Easter to watch their TV debut, this is what we saw. We were all confused because we didn’t see any Dr. Pepper in the video. The last image took a second or two to sink in. And once it did, the video became an unforgettable announcement, mixed with tears of joy and peals of laughter. Classic!
Love the video! Very creative, I hope (someday) I can come up with some kind of creative way to tell my parents that they are soon to be grandparents!
That was awesome. Creativity MUST run in the family.
Ours was only exciting for my mother in-law. We travelled back to South Bend, Indiana for a graduation party. When the whole family was together, my husband handed his mom the ultrasound printout and told her that’s what we’d been up to lately. She searched the page for my name and just about passed out once she confirmed it was for us. Then she started yelling “I’m going to be a grandma!” The whole family got to congratulate her. She said she’d given up on ever having a grandchild as we were almost 40. She spent hours on the phone calling all of her friends and family that weren’t there. It was nice to make her so happy.
That video was fantastic! I love the dog in the beginning and how they totally set him up (poor pooch!)!
I too have dreamed about ways I would announce my pregnancy…SOMEDAY… I found a couple of books once that were called “I love my daddy” and “I love my mommy” and thought that when that day comes I will run secretly to the book store to get them and leave them on the coffee table for my husband to “run across”; guaranteed it will take him a while when that happens because I am always coming home with “baby stuff” for my niece, nephew and god-daughter!
I had tried to get pregnant for 17 years! (yikes!) so 6 years ago when I finally was, I was elated -and took 9 pregnancy tests during the day between 9am and 5pm when my husband got home from work. (that was THE LONGEST day of MY life!)
It was my day off and I set up all of my extensive teddy bear collection up on picnic blankets all over the living room floor as if they were having a tea party/picnic, I then went and bought lots of pink and blue balloons and tied them to the bears paws, it looked so adorable!…and being a professional photographer…I of course set up our video camera on a tripod to capture his expression, and then the the bears and I waited…..and waited…for hours….(taking pregnancy tests every few hours of course,LOL) When my husband pulled into the driveway I turned the hidden camera on and sat casually reading a magazine….the video is priceless and Im SOOOOOOOOO glad we have it!
Our 6 yr old sweet Madison is how we named our baby store (which carries tons of LeTop of course!!) Madison Avenue!
Karen, that is such a funny and wonderful story!! Even though it’s 6 years delayed, CONGRATS on Madison and Madison Avenue! If you have stills of the tea party, send them along via our upload link! Would love to see them and the video!
