A couple of weekends ago, my mom and sisters-in-law threw a baby shower for me. They decided on “The Wizard of Oz” theme because my daughter dressed up as Dorothy last Halloween—and she requested that Daddy and Mommy be dressed up as well. A family photo was taken of the three of us in full costume, so it was conveniently appropriate that we welcome our little munchkin the way “big sister” would want it.
Everything was decorated perfectly to match the theme. The invitations were worded with Bottles and diapers and bibs… Oh my! The shower was held at The Emerald City (or my mom’s house). And when I arrived at “The Emerald City,” all I had to do was follow the yellow brick road to the dining room where everything was decorated with blue gingham tablecloths, wicker baskets, ruby red slippers, lollipops, and homemade rainbow cupcakes! It was a wonderful sight to behold! Even the sign-in guest sheets were scrapbook pages in “The Wizard of Oz” theme.
We played a few games:
- As an ice breaker, everyone had a piece of paper with a famous mom pinned to her back. Each one of us had to figure out who we were by asking the guests yes or no questions. It’s a good way for guests to get acquainted.
- Estimate how many M&Ms are in the jar. The closest one wins!
- Guess what song I’m humming – Everyone picked a song out of a hat, then we hummed our children’s song to each other to try and find our partner. My mom and my aunt (her sister) were the last two left. They were humming different tunes but obviously had the same song.
- Paper Plate Baby – Guests were asked to draw a baby on a paper plate in 1 minute. The catch is… the paper plate is on her head! The Mommy-To-Be picks the winning baby illustration.
- Gift Bingo – What better way to keep guests entertained while the Mommy-To-Be is opening presents? Everyone was given a Bingo card with random baby items listed. As presents were opened, guests would mark items received off their cards. The first person to yell “BINGO” wins!
I couldn’t believe how much time and energy my family devoted to this baby shower. It was very touching! I can only hope that when it comes time for me to reciprocate, I’ll be able to match their creativity and merrymaking!
Those are some great baby shower ideas. It sounds like a great time.
