When I was pregnant with my daughter, all I wanted was watermelon. It didn’t matter that it was out of season or if the watermelon wasn’t sweet, I just wanted the refreshing red flesh of watermelon… And I would pay anything for it!
With my current pregnancy, I am craving all sorts of things. During the first trimester, I craved cocktails, such as margaritas and lemon drops. Obviously, I didn’t give in to these cravings. Instead I looked for other ways to satisfy them, such as drinking lemonade in a salt- or sugar-rimmed glass, or sipping margarita mix on the rocks. Neither worked. Needless to say, I had to patiently wait for the craving to subside, then moved on to the next trimester.
My second trimester has been all about the PERFECT banana split. I wanted the usual scoops of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, AND the sundae sauces had to be in the right spots: pineapple sauce on vanilla, hot fudge on chocolate, and strawberry sauce on strawberry. Of course, the whipped cream had to be slathered all over with sprinkles, almonds, and a cherry on top. Not walnuts, not peanuts, but almonds. And if there were no almonds available, someone (usually my husband) had to go out to get me almonds.
When people find out you’re pregnant, one of the first things they ask is, “Do you know what you’re having?” But when women find out you’re pregnant, they also ask, “Any weird cravings?” So I asked a few women what they craved during their pregnancies. Here’s a list of some of the weird ones:
- an Oreo cookie with a dollop of white frosting (from a tub) and a peanut butter cup on top
- escargot (what my mother craved when she was pregnant with me, which is my excuse for being slow and slimy?! ;-))
- Krispy Kremes with Classic Coke
- cold chocolate cake right out of the refrigerator
- Taco Bell (for breakfast, lunch and dinner)
- pickle juice but not the pickles

I ate so many oranges when I was pregnant with my older daughter Betsy everyone thought she would come out kind of orange! She does have kind of reddish hair…
I was talking to sweetie’s sister-in-law who was pregnant earlier this year. About to say our good-byes, I told her about our sushi dinner plans, and she immediately put in her virtual “order” with me. I thought she was done after the glass of wine and a few yummy rolls (she was making me hungry!), so I said, “Okay. I’ll be sure to enjoy that for you…” But she cut me off and said, “Wait! I’m not done with my order yet!” Haha! She was craving some sushi that night!! 😉
When I was prego with both my boys all I craved was wienerschnitzel chilli cheese dog…I can eat 3 in one sitting, maybe that’s why I gain 60 pounds, lol…and cucumber…hmmm, there’s a pattern here I just noticed…lol
Out of four pregnancies the craving I remember most is from the first. I was a vegetarian going into it; not the healthy kind but the kind that eats too many scones and too much cheese pizza. When I was pregnant, I suddenly had to have a tuna sandwich on whole grain bread, milk and fruit salad for lunch every day. That lasted for the whole first half of my pregnancy. I think my body was trying to tell me something!
My first pregnancy was 10 years ago, so as far as cravings I truly can not remember. this last pregnancy started with lots and lots of carbs. I could eat white rice with soy sauce all day. then it was california rolls with japanese food or chinese food, I thought for sure I was having an asian baby…
I craved for mustard. TONS of mustard. Especially early on in the pregnancy.
Eggs – I think I was consuming about 6 eggs a day at one point of the pregnancy. Scrambled, hard boiled, sunny side up. Any way. I was also craving miso soup with nori.
My craving was for avocados…anything containing avocados were fair game! I insisted on going for guacamole and chips nearly every other day. When it came time to paint my son’s bathroom I picked a green color to match his frog theme and what do you think the color was…”guacamole green”!
Strawberries (in the dead of winter). Egg McMuffins.
Food in general for me. But I do remember craving for watermelon. I would eat a small round one every day and the guys at work would laugh at me. I remember one time Rob and I were at the Nugget Market and I was so craving for pot stickers. He ran in and got two orders, before we left the parking lot there was less than one order left… and he didn’t have any himself, I think he was scared.
I would put Texas Pete on EVERYTHING. I loved it, loved it. My favorite thing was to put it in the popcorn bag right outta the microwave and mix it up…delicious…try it.
Wow! I love all the comments.
Foods from my youth…
I insisted my parents make the homemade foods I loved as a child but had not had in a while. Red soup (white rice and meatballs in a thick tomato soup); sweet and sour pork with white rice; taco salad with square chunks of avocado…the list goes on and my parents were more than happy to accomodate me with their first grandchild in my belly. The only problem was when they tried to alter the original recipe. It had to be EXACTLY the same…nothing “new and improved.” Also, I drank a gallon of lemonade a day…from the fresh Meyers lemons on my parents’ tree…made lovingly by Mom. BTW…all 3 of my girls are great eaters!
In the first trimester when I was super duper sick, the only thing I could really stomach was a 7/11 Cherry Fanta Slurpee (sans the caffeine). By my second trimester, I was drinking milk like a “square sailor”. I went through about a gallon every day and a half. Other than that, I didn’t really get any weird cravings or things I had to have.
With my first daughter, I craved japanese food (particularly udon, sukiyaki, oyako, and ramen) and mango slush. Of course, that drove my husband crazy. He was so sick of japanese food during that whole pregnancy. So with my second daughter, things were totally different. I craved mexican food (which I never really liked). And now that the girls have developed their own likes/dislikes, they seemed to have remembered because the oldest likes soups and japanese food, while the younger one likes Chipotle! Interesting…
That’s easy. Fruit, fruit and more fruit. It’s so specific…nothing other than fruit. I had a dream about sliced gala apples with a little bit of salt on top. I can’t get enough fruit.
I LOVE salt on apples! I know…bad – but tastes so good!
Jamba Juice, fruit smoothies, Coke Flavored slurpees
I had three boys-each pregnancy the cravings were different. With my oldest Son, Josh, it was Broccoli. I would eat just that for a meal (he turned out to be my one child who would pick eating an apple over candy). With my middle Son, Derrick, I wanted ice cream! Derrick was born weighing 10lbs. 5 oz! While pregnant with my baby, Shawn, I craved & ate bag after bag of cinnamon red hot candies. Shawn is my junk food kid and survives on drive thru meals. Gee…you think these cravings mean something?
OK, Kathy… that is scaring me now. My first pregnancy was all about watermelon, and my daughter will pick fruit over french fries. She’s a healthy (but picky) eater. This pregnancy, all I want is sugar: cookies, cakes, cupcakes, chocolate… I am hoping this one doesn’t turn out to be a junk food junkie! Maybe I can intervene now.
When I was pregnant with my first child, I just wanted pasta. I think I spanned the globe with this craving: Japanese ramen, udon or soba noodles, Chinese chow mein and chow fun, Italian spaghetti, tortellini and ravioli, Thai pad thai noodles, Filipino pancit, and all-American Chicken noodle soup and macaroni salad! I ate it all!
With my second pregnancy, I wanted potatoes… Baked, fried, home fries, boiled… And the wonderful thing was that unlike noodles, you can have some kind of potatoes at every meal of the day! I don’t know if there is a connection, but my kids love carbs! … 🙂
My first pregnancy was 5 years ago and I couldn’t stop drinking Dr Pepper and A&W Root Beer. Also, Chicken McNuggets and Chicken Chow Mein were my biggest food cravings. And currently, I am pregnant again. Chinese food and ginger ale seem to be my weakness right now. And pickles, I’ll eat pickles with anything.
