Yesterday, we had to stop by Safeway to get a few essentials…and sweetie became insistent on getting bologna and Wonderbread. He said he’s been craving mustard and bolonga sandwiches for days! So, this morning we made the sandwiches which are now in foldover sandwich bags sitting on the kitchen counter, achieving room temperature by lunchtime! I was told of all the finer points of how they should be made and how they should be consumed. Gee whiz!! Then, sweetie told me a charming story about how his dad always made all the school lunches for sweetie and his 3 siblings, and how their sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper, not plastic bags. This was definitely a different kind of morning…and all before coffee! The big question remains…without being jostled and semi-crushed by an apple or orange in the confines of a brown bag, will they taste the same?
…has a way with…B-O-L-O-G-N-A!

Oooh. These were so good. Just like when I was little. Although, sweetie was right; needed two slices of bologna.
Fried bologna sandwiches were an occassional Saturday afternoon special made by Dad. Along with winter morning oatmeal and Sunday eggs. Hmm–good thing Mom didn’t get sick too often. What I & my 3 brothers did for dinner on those nights escapes memory (for a reason??!)
Reading about school lunch got my husband & I talking about the lunch we’ll send with our son when he’s old enough to carry his own cool lunch box to school. (Flashback of my awesome pink Barbie lunch box!) It will have to be trade worthy (though he won’t want to spare it). The pickle will always be packed separetely given Daddy’s daily pickle & cheese sandwich that was absolutely soaked and barely edible 😦 by lunchtime–>every day! (He still quivers at the thought!) Not exactly trade-able, but maybe we’ll send the occassional pb&j with chips smooshed inside- mmmMm!! (I dare you to try it again!) and the homemade brownie to press down & roll up into a fudgy deluxe ball. (Not so sure why we got in “trouble” for that!?!)
In this day & age, when sushi is a common lunch pleasure (My first bite was at an ancient–relative to today’s kids–> 26!) the competition will be stiff! A challenge I’m looking forward to–despite a few food allergies to work around–Did I really say having a baby wouldn’t change my life at all 🙂 maybe it’s just altered my idea of fun 🙂
